The Knit Before Christmas

New Features!

Filed under: Community — jeanette @ 4:54 pm

Hello friends,

The Knit Before Christmas has some great new features, but I need your help to make them interesting.

1. The Community Map

  • the flags on the map represent Christmas at Sea knitters.
  • Clicking the flags will display information about a particular volunteer knitter or knitting group

How can you or your group get on the map? By leaving a comment or sending an email with as much information as you would like displayed. If you don’t want to display your address, simply send me your zip code.

The community map is one more way that CAS knitters can connect with each other.  Maybe you are knitting Mariner’s scarves all alone in Toledo and want to join a group. Maybe your knitting group needs more members. Maybe you just want to represent your town.  I’m looking forward to seeing a well populated map.

 2. The Gallery

We have a fantastic new gallery, just waiting to be filled with pictures of CAS knitters, finished objects, works in progress and knitting groups in action. So send your pictures to me and I will be happy to post them. Please include any caption you wish, or if you’d like me to write a caption, just let me know.

I’ll be waiting to hear from you.

Jeanette

  2. Please add me to the map as a knitter from St. Marks Episcopal Church, 16509.
I know there are others in the Diocese of NW Pennsylvania. Keep up the good work!
    Peace,

  3. Hi! I’m part of an interfaith knitting group that meets at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 41056. We have knit for a local nursing home and shelter for abused children. This fall several of us want to start knitting for The Seaman’s Church Institute’s “Christmas on the River”. Our town is on the Ohio River and is home to a regional office for Crouse Corporation a leader in barge transportation on the Ohio and its tributaries. One of our parishioners crews on the barges so now we even have a whole crew to knit for! Keep up the good work - we’ll be send you photos

  6. Hello,

We have a knitting group at Christ Church New Brigton, Staten Island which is knitting scarves and hats for Christmas at Sea. Our group meets at the church on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month at 3:00pm. The church is located at 76 Franklin Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10301. Any knitters are most welcome to join us. We also have been making hats and blankets for preemies at the Richmond University Medical Center. Please add us to the map

  7. I found your group several years ago in KNITTERS.
For many years I knitted hats, vests, and scarves for my husband. He was in construction and it gets a bit cold here in New Mexico in the winter. He died in 2004 and my knitting was put on hold. I did not knit for a couple of years for Christmas-at-Sea and I missed it.
I live in the 87110 area. Are there any CAS knitters in this area?

  8. Jane, I’m in ZIP code 87121, so there is at least one other CAS knitter in your area!

I’m knitting for CAS as part of the Whipstick Knitters. We are all fans of Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin novels and members of the Gunroom discussion list, which can be found at the website I mentioned.

Our goal was to donate at least one item for each of the 21 Aubrey/Maturin novels. We have at least 42 items to give this year, and hope to do more in 2008.

  10. As a teacher, wife and mother, my life is demanding; but I find relaxation from the simple pleasure of knitting. I began knitting for the Christmas-at-Sea program when my children participated in travel sports. I found I could knit at practices and games.

My children are now in college but I still enjoy knitting and traveling. I knitted during a10-hour flight to Alaska this summer. (Airlines are allowing knitting needles in carry-on luggage.)

I’m a solo knitter but would be happy to join a travel knitting group. Please add Toledo, Ohio 43606 to the map.

  11. Hey there,

Please add Teaneck, NJ to your map (07666). I’m a brand new knitter, and my mom is a veteran. Hopefully, we’ll generate more Jersey recruits for CAS in the near future!

Great blog! Thanks for the inspiration.

  12. Hey, friends!
I’m no knitter, but I am the one responsible for distributing all of your wonderful projects to our inland mariners! Thank you so much! You have no idea how much it means to the crews to receive your gifts of love. they are genuiunely appreciative, as am I.
Keep up the good work, and add 42001 to map!
    Blessings,
    Ann

  13. Hi there!
Chalk up one more for Staten Island (10301). I’ll have to drop by Christ Church when I have a free Thursday afternoon! Who knew there were so many other knitters right in my own neighborhood?
I am lucky enough to have access to a wonderful knitting guru and to be part of a fabulous group of knitters here in NYC who knit for Christmas at Sea.
    Happy knitting, everyone!

  15. Hi,
I am the daughter of a merchant mariner, and I have a pair of socks and a vest that someone knit for him during WWII. He kept those items folded in his drawer for over 50 years, so I know how important the knitted gifts were to him. I am now proud to be knitting for CAS, and am trying to send in at least three sets of hats/scarves per year. Add zip code 06001 (Avon, CT) to your list!
