Sock SkylineHello knitters! Welcome to the Christmas at Sea knit blog. My name is Jeanette, I am both a volunteer knitter for Christmas at Sea and a staff person of the Seamen’s Church Institute of New York and New Jersey. Whether you are a knitter, eager to learn, a friend to SCI or just happened upon this page, I’m glad you made it here. Christmas at Sea distributes 16,000 handknitted gifts to those who work on the water and are away from home on Christmas Day. Each one of those gifts is made by one of our 3,500 volunteers. If you are a Christmas at Sea volunteer knitter, post a comment and let me know. If you mention your town or zip code, I will add your location to our community map and we will begin to get an idea of exactly how vast our knitting community is. Please add The Knit Before Christmas to your blogroll, take a button, or simply mention us to a knitting friend. If you are not already a volunteer knitter for Christmas at Sea, I urge you to print out one of our free patterns and cast on today. Our patterns are suitable for beginners and quick enough for more seasoned knitters to complete in just a few nights. I hope to hear from you often and soon. Please visit About The Knit Before Christmas or our website to learn more about both The Seamen’s Church Institute and Christmas at Sea.

  1. Jeanette - so good to see this up on line - its a great idea and a very good way to stay connected to the Christmas at Sea and Christmas on the River programs at the Seamen’s Church Institute. I look forward to future postings even though I am too clumsy to wield the knitting needles and benefit from your knitting wisdom!

  3. Being a thrifty and income challenged knitter I knit only with Red Heart Super Saver “No Dye Lot” yarn. Unfortunately the No Dye Lot is having big time problems and when I notified the company of my 21 skeins of not matching No Dye Lot yarn they sent me replacements and told me to keep the defective yarn so you know where that is going - scarfs, scarfs, scarfs, scarfs, scarfs, etc. I don’t do socks, vests or hats. Seamen rejoice! And thanks Red Heart, I will continue to use their yarn but only with matching dye lots.

  4. Love knitting for Seamen’s. Just finished my 3rd or 4th scarf and will put them in the mail soon. Will do a crocheted one next and another helmet. Great way to use up the “drawer full” of yarn I have.
